Beware New Yorkers: it's not Dieciseis de septiembre 1

Walking up Park Ave today I experienced a surreal phenomenon: Mariachi everywhere.

Not performing, mind you. But undoubtedly going from one shitty job to another in full corona-sponsored regalia!

I would like to believe that these artists are able to raise a family while preserving their cultural heritage in music. It is, however, more likely that they move from a shitty service job in a kitchen only to (for two to three days a year) don a costume which is a caricature of pancho villa. They’ll make a few bucks while drunked brokers struggle to slur the words to la bamba. ‘yo no soy marinaro’

I’m the captain, mutha fucka!

Well, be careful. Because they’re all over midtown.

And if you’re into that sort of thing, check out mama mexico.

A free margarita to the first villa novan who can recall the battle that 5 mayo commemorates.
