one coin, one play. or “warrior, you’re pushing me”

the conman maintains that this happened at brunswick, and there’s a chance that’s true, though i’m pretty sure this event happened at roller kingdom.
regardless, i have a new toy. it’s a full size arcade cabinet running MAME, the arcade simulator. that means that just about every arcade game we played as kids can be [...]

SomethingStore

Nutpharm has mentioned the mystery auctions on ebay in the past. in these auctions, you bid on something unknown. it might be a ferrari. it might be a rock in a box with a label that says ’suck this.’ you never know. but the seller certainly does better than the [...]

i can’t wait

goodbye cablevision

i’ve grown tired of all the promises delivered by cablevision about adding more HD content.
we have two HD TVs, and it’s a waste to only have a few HD channels. so I’m switching to DirecTV
that also means that i can get NESN out here in yankee country. i don’t know why i didn’t [...]

HD DVD is dead

It’s official. I returned my Toshiba HD DVD A3 Player to Amazon today after watching just three HD movies on it.
HD movies are awesome. We saw Jumpers in the theater yesterday, and I’m convinced that an HD movie on my home screen is better. Jumpers was still visually stunning, and is nice [...]

the downfall of hd dvd

i’m pretty geeky. there aren’t many people who care about the ‘format wars’ of hd dvd versus blu-ray. but things have gotten hot lately as studios jump ship and hd dvd fights back.
toshiba announced a price drop on their base player, the hd a3, and you can scoop one up on amazon right [...]

i may have found my next projector

No word on pricing yet, but this Mitsubishi HC4900 HD Projector might be my next home theater projector. The Optoma is getting a bit long in the tooth and 720p XBOX360, even on a 109″ screen, can get a bit tired.

Fast

Monitor Musings

I’m considering upgrading the monitors in my home office. I spend 3-4 days a week working from home, so they get a fair amount of use. As you may know, my exotic work surface is a hollow core door from Home Depot painted candy apple red, resting on two height adjustable saw horses. [...]

downloading safari for Vista as we speak

steve just announced it in san fran, so i’m trying it out

Cablevision saga continued

Well, they did turn my service back on.
But they didn’t call back as promised to talk to me about LightPath or the ever elusive Optimum Online Ultra. Or the mythical Optimum Online Ultra.
And I bought their Boost service, which seems to be free of caps. And is screamingly fast (30Mbps down, about 5 [...]

I just bought a single share of Cablevision (CVC)

I’m going to complain via the Investor Relations route.

Cablevision called back!

Finally, Cablevision called me back! Woo hoo! And the super helpful, if not interrupt prone, David turned my bandwidth on again. Apparently, sustained uploads and high levels of contention on the Cablevision network devices will cause this to cap happen. So, they can’t tell me how much I can use the [...]

Cablevision Optimum Online have capped my Broadband Internet Service

I’ve been out of town for the last ten days-or-so.
I returned to find that my usually zippy broadband Internet service with Cablevision’s Optimum Online (not Boost) was running at a little less than I remembered. In the past, I’ve has speeds over 10mbps down and 2-3mbps up. Very nice. (test your connection here [...]

SXSW: Spore. I want.

Will Wright demo’ed his new game Spore today. Its the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen on a computer. Like everyone else in the room, I want it.
Imagine being able to walk through the wardrobe every day of your life. On your laptop. Amazing.
EDIT: Here’s the link. This was originally sent from my [...]

SXSW: Dan Rather? Yes, Dan Rather.

The esteemed Mr Rather spoke to us today about history, news, his transition to HDNet, where he gets MacNeil-Lehrer-esque latitude to report what he wants, how he wants.
While I love HDNet, I haven’t seen Dan’s show yet, so I can’t comment on it. I need to setup the Tivo with it ASAP.
It is interesting [...]

SXSW Continues

We flew from NY to Austin with Paul Rudd, and I just bumped into him again in the convention center. Small hands.
It was a rough morning. Once again, I had too many free beers and margaritas. If you’re ever in Austin, don’t miss a meal at Guero’s. Even if it [...]

SXSW continues to rock

Some good sessions. Some not so good. Kathy Sierra was much more insightful than I expected, and hugely more useful (albeit less trendy) than last year’s keynote (wasnt it craig of the list and jimmy of the wiki?) I found it to be the most useful session I’ve ever had here, and think ill try [...]

Spring Break for Geeks: South by Southwest

South by Southwest has begun.
Last night we drank free beers on the roof at Six, then it was off for some late night grub and cheap drinks at the always cheesy Chuy’s. And now I’m off to listen to Peter Rojas (one of my favorite gadget guys) talk about Emerging Social and Technology Trends. [...]

Phone Porn: Blackberry 8300 “Daytona”

Yes, I actually get excited about this stuff. Pathetic, I know.
Here are some photos out of Spain about the new Blackberry 8300 phone. I don’t even have my 8820 yet!
It looks cool. I just wish they’d put one in the Pearl’s form factor.
Ah well. I’m sure that one will be leaked [...]

Blackberry 8820 can’t get here fast enough

I’m a phone geek. I don’t spend any money on them (the company provides me with one) but if I had to, I’d still buy a couple a year.
More accurately, I’m a PDA geek.
Ever since I had my first Merlin, The Electronic Wizard, I wished I could have an electronic device which was a [...]

Why don’t I have more free time to do fun things?

This is pretty excellent. It’s a DIY keyboard with the aesthetics of an old manual typewriter.
what’s wonderful about this mod is that the IBM keyboard upon which this is based has a wonderful tactile quality- the clicks of the keys are phenomenally satisfying before the modification begins. Adding these keys would make it [...]

Windows Dreamscene Content

I’m loving the Windows Vista DreamScene Ultimate Extra video background. I’m sure someone will tell me that Macs had it for years, but it’s just another component that makes Vista a pleasure to use despite being mandatory for getting real work accomplished.
This is one of a few places where I’ve found anything to run [...]

that’s fucking real

just as i love star wars, i love real space ships.

Engadget: Sega set to cease GD-ROM production, spells end for Dreamcast games

I had no idea that they were still making games for the Dreamcast. And I certainly had no idea about this NAOMI thing, although I’ve wanted to build a stand-up game console ever since I had a meeting in LA with a Variety dude who had an original Tron arcade game in his office.  He [...]

I don’t really know what to say

A projector shaped like R2D2.

Got any friends in OZ?

Well, here’s another link.  I don’t know what I’ve just sent to some stranger in Australia, but it might have been threatening or offensive.
Regardless, I love the look and feel of this site.

Test image posting for Goats

I was asked by the Glennis how to post an image as a thumbnail linked to a larger image. That should dramatically decrease the load time on his Gauthier Manor entry from a few weeks back.
Create a new post throught the “Write Post” link. Below the post itself, Upload a file. That flips [...]

SXSWi Was Excellent

The festival was the best technology gathering I’ve ever attended, at least in terms of discussing the social aspects of interacting with technology.
Wonderful people.
Great sessions.
Rooms that were too small.
And a fantastic venue in Austin.
I can’t wait for next year.
And the Red Bull House rocked!
