Straight Outta Compton- Goodbye D.J. 1

Dennis JohnsonDo you remember the famous Johnny Most quote “Bird stole the ball”?

Well, after he stole the pass to the Big Baby Bill Laimbeer, Larry Bird passed it to Dennis Johnson, his partner on many amazing plays throughout the Celtic’s reign in the 1980s, including some great highlights from the the NBA Championships teams in ’84 and ’86.

The weird-looking freckled face freak is dead.

he had an erratic jump shot, but seemed to have limitless amounts of energy and eyes in the back of his head. Great with the assist or the clutch steal, he made the All-Star team five times.

For me, as a kid growing up in New England in the 80s, when you were stuck playing guard, he was the guy you wanted to be, or Danny Ange. Sure, maybe if you were throwing punches at a giant you imagined that you were Jerry Sichting (with better hair)

Anyway, he’s dead at 52. It makes me feel old to know that these people who were so vibrantly alive during my youth are now dropping with little notice by the rest of the world. At 52, it’s not statistically interesting, but had he died during the 80s it would have been huge. And I’m frightened to realize just how much time has passed since those days. I feel old.

When Magic dies, not matter how old he is, it will be huge.
